A developmental edit is a crucial part of reinforcing the overall strength of a piece of writing, and writers usually approach the idea of one once they feel they've done a fair amount of self-editing and need help either putting a finger on what exactly is still missing in their work or need help resolving a big picture issue they know is there. Solid books aren't published without having at least one developmental edit done. In this kind of edit, I will make suggestions about big picture issues like plot holes or one-dimensional characters right there on the text so you know exactly where issues like these occur. Being able to conduct revisions based on a developmental edit allows writers to feel a lot more confident in the strength of their work before pitching to agents or publishers.
